After failing the entrance exam to enter a technical college's nursing program, Kathy was referred to the Stateline Literacy Council for individual tutoring to improve reading comprehension and spelling. At the literacy council, she was matched with a tutor who met with her religiously every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for an hour and a half. Kathy was motivated to change her life. She wanted to enter the nursing program and so she worked hard at improving her reading and writing skills.
After 8 months of diligent and dedicated effort, Kathy retook the exam scoring in the 70% range, up from the original 17% mark she received initially. She soon quit her job at a local manufacturing plant and was accepted into the technical college's nursing program. Kathy was able to pursue her dream career, regain her self-confidence, be an example to her children and provide a better income for her family. Literacy changes lives!
