JOB SUMMARY: 
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller will have responsibility for all of the financial activity of Wisconsin Literacy, Inc. The Controller responsibilities include the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of the organization’s financial reporting, establishing and directing the financial goals and objects, including the budget, for the organization, and managing the audit process. This position is responsible for ensuring that internal controls are in place, enforced and reviewed periodically for conformance to accounting and financial standards and applicable regulations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
The following are the primary/essential functions of the position, although are not all-inclusive.

  • Serves as the internal consultant for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, Associate Director, Development Director, and other key stakeholders in all financial matters, making recommendations and suggestions pro-actively to help Wisconsin Literacy, Inc meet its mission and objectives and to aid in growth of the Organization
  • Prepares all budgets and interim financial statements to be used by the Executive Director, Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and the management team for management of the Organization and serves as a point of reference for all growth opportunities for the Organization
  • Manages the accounting functions, including maintenance of the general ledger, processing of vendor payments, processing of staff expense reports, preparation of bank deposits, recording of donations, preparation of project reimbursement requests, and preparation of payroll entries to ensure timeliness and accuracy of the accounting records
  • Identifies best financial practice procedures and communicates them to the management team, Board of Directors, and staff, as applicable
  • Reviews short- and long-term goals of the Organization in light of existing and projected financial resources
  • Participates in all internal planning regarding proposed program expansion, to ensure alignment of programs with financial resources 
  • Provides support in the grant application process by reviewing the application and providing detailed budget information to be submitted with the application
  • Manages and coordinated all aspects of the audit with external auditors, including all areas related to the federal Single Audit
  • Builds relationships with banks, vendors, outside consultants and others as needed to maximize those relationships
  • Uses technology to optimize all reporting and analytical functions of the financial results of the Organization, including providing timely reporting to project managers for use in operating their respective programs
  • Ensures that Wisconsin Literacy meets all critical regulatory and legal requirements, including those associated with the Single Audit, registration of the Organization with appropriate state and local agencies, as necessary

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work in a typical office environment involving exposure to fluorescent lighting, potential ink fumes, contact with synthetic materials and air conditioning. 
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for 8 hours
  • Ability to type at a computer for 8 hours
  • Ability to lift up to10 lbs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Knowledge and Competencies: 

  • Experience with general ledger software; experience with QuickBooks a plus
  • Proficiency with Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Salesforce or other donor software
  • Experience working with external auditors
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and multi-task
  • Strong motivational and leadership skills

Education/Certification and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Eight years of experience in non-profit accounting management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificated Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Non-Profit Accounting Professional (CNAP)
  • Ten years of experience in non-profit accounting management
  • Experience working within a State of Wisconsin governmental department 
  • Experience with a Federal Single Audit

Salary based on experience and Madison-area NPO salary surveys.
