Tutoring with Northstar Digital Literacy

This course offers supported exploration of the online resource Northstar so that tutors can feel prepared to introduce the curriculum to their students. 

Participants will 

  • navigate the Northstar platform as a student 
  • try the assessments and online practice 
  • role play teaching with Northstar teacher-led lesson scripts

Prerequisite: Introduction to Digital Literacy

How to Teach Digital Literacy

This course will explain the best practices for teaching digital skills to adults, using concrete examples to illustrate. Participants will apply their understanding of the best practices by watching a video and/or role playing.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Digital Literacy

Integrating Digital Literacy into Other Content Instruction

This course addresses how to add digital skill instruction to the ELL, adult literacy, GED or citizenship instruction tutors are already doing. 

Participants will 

  • learn how to break down digital literacy curriculum to meet learning goals
  • create lesson plans
  • practice teaching to other participants in the course

Prerequisites: 

Remote Instruction 101: Logistics and Essential Skills

This course will cover 

  • how to set up virtual meetings and invite learners
  • common features of video conferencing platforms
  • best practices for successful remote teaching 

You will leave feeling more prepared for your first remote lessons!

Advanced Zoom Tools and Strategies for Remote Instruction

Participants will practice techniques to refine their remote instruction including 

  • Zoom annotation tools
  • whiteboards
  • breakout rooms 
  • using additional cameras 

We will also discuss best practices for converting traditionally in-person activities into online activities. 

Prerequisite: Remote Instruction 101 or experience teaching remotely using Zoom.

Digital Tools for Teaching

Come learn about an online tool or resource that you can use to make your teaching more engaging and accessible. A different tool will be featured each session.
