The Power of Community and Collaboration

By Mercedez Butts SAC, PS, Joyce's Legacy Education Center
Tambria’s commitment to personal growth has naturally extended to her commitment to uplifting her community. As a single mother who relocated from Arizona to Milwaukee in search of a better life, she brought with her not only determination but also a deep desire to serve others. Her journey through our GED program and now into healthcare is rooted in her belief that real change begins with giving back.
From the moment Tambria enrolled in our program, she became a source of encouragement to her peers. Even while managing the demands of motherhood and work, she never hesitated to offer words of support to classmates who were feeling discouraged. During her own struggles with the GED math exam—failing twice before ultimately passing—Tambria was open about her journey. She shared her setbacks and lessons learned, creating a space where others felt safe to talk about their own fears. Her honesty and encouragement became a lifeline for many who were considering giving up.
What makes Tambria stand out is her servant-hearted mindset. She often stayed after Boot Camp sessions to help others understand concepts, and she celebrated not just her own milestones but the accomplishments of those around her. Tambria understood that her success was intertwined with the success of her community—and she made sure to lift as she climbed.
Now, as of today she's in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training! Tambria is preparing to serve her community in an even greater way. Her choice to enter healthcare was intentional—she wants to provide compassionate care to vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and underserved. She has expressed a specific interest in working in long-term care facilities where many patients do not have consistent family support. To Tambria, this work isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.
Even outside the classroom and training environment, Tambria’s actions reflect her dedication to being a positive force in Milwaukee. She regularly volunteers at her son’s school and has shared plans to advocate for adult education by speaking at community events once she earns her certification. Her story resonates with many who feel stuck in survival mode. She wants others—especially single parents—to know that it’s never too late to rebuild.
Her journey is not just one of personal achievement, but of collective impact.
