Meet "Maya"

UPDATE: "Maya" was matched with a tutor, and they have been meeting regularly.  She has been working on basic sight words and reading and writing personal information for the purposes of independently filling out applications and attending appointments.

"Maya" was 31 when she moved to the United States from the Ivory Coast. As with most girls in her country, she was sent to be a housekeeper and denied a formal education. Twenty-five years later, she is a successful small business owner who desperately wants to learn to read and write. She came to Greater Waukesha Literacy last December and was matched with a terrific volunteer tutor. For three months, they made real progress. Then tragedy struck -- her tutor was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. So now, Maya is back on the waiting list, hoping to be matched with another volunteer soon.
