Digital Literacy

Digital literacy teaches:

  • Technical skills
    • computer, smartphone, and tablet use
    • email
    • word processing
    • spreadsheets
    • communication via virtual platforms
  • Critical thinking skills
    • efficient online searching
    • evaluation of information
    • problem solving with technology
    • internet safety

Online learning uses digital platforms for English, math, reading, history, and content area instruction. It requires some digital literacy but may not explicitly teach those skills.

Tutor Training is available for tutors to be able to teach digital literacy skills to their learners.

Northstar Digital Literacy

Free version: 

  • Assessments for all 15 topics aligned to Northstar standards.
  • Self-directed online learning for 4 topics: basic computer skills, email, Microsoft Word, career search skills

Paid version:

  • Assessments for all 15 topics (and ability to proctor and offer certificates)
  • Self-directed online learning for all topics
  • Instructor-led curriculum
  • Learner Management System to track progress
  • Available in Spanish 

Wisc-Online Basic Computer Skills MOOC

  • 9 free modules with pre-assessments, learning activities, and post-tests
  • Students can track their progress
  • Students can earn badges for completion

Digital Skills Library

  • Open repository of free learning resources 
  • Aligned to Seattle Digital Equity Initiative Standards
  • Lessons searchable by topic or standard

DART (Digital Access and Resilience in Texas)

  • 20-lesson curriculum adapted from Tyson Foods
  • integrates beginning ESL with foundational digital skills
  • for immigrants and refugees with no/low English literacy or familiarity with the Latin alphabet. 
  • uses the smartphone as a starting point and then transfers skills to computer.
